Childrens' developmental progress occurs in their day-to-day living.
Community-based programs are the "Natural Environments" in which day-to-day learning and living often takes place. The Community Inclusion Program at ELI works together with families and Community Organizations to promote and support the integration of young children with special needs into recreational and/or educational classes and events designed for families with young children.
ELI's Community Inclusion Specialists are sensitive to the challenges that families with children who have special needs face with the mainstream community. They are here to provide support customized to the needs of each family and community program which can inlude:
- Assistance with Community Activity registration
- Adaptation of program curriculum to accomodate the child's needs
- Provision of one-to-one inclusion support for family and recreational program
- Facilitation of community awareness regarding inclusive settings & program opportunities
- Provision of ongoing education and support for families to continue to advocate for their children.
